It is certainly true that we eat with our eyes before our stomachs and that means it is essential to take good photos of your bakes to sell them really well. Have a go at the tips in this free tutorial and see what a difference it makes!

Top Tips for Creating Simple Photo Backgrounds:

  • Wallpaper works really well as a back drop to your bakes.
  • Something fairly simple is best, so it doesn't distract too much from your cakes - polka dots work well.
  • A curve is essential when laying out the wall paper, if you have anything too sharp it can create a shadow.
  • Take landscape and portrait photos so you have a choice.
  • You can also do some simple styling. If you have used sprinkles on your cake then you can add sprinkles around the cake to add another dimension to the photo.
  • A white tile also works really well in food photography, it works as a really clean background.
  • Have the cupcake fairly near the front so you have a good stretch of white behind it. The white tile gives a nice reflection.
  • More cupcakes can be placed a little way behind to give a different effect and a blurry background.
  • Doilies can be used on the tile as well, and can also be dressed with more sprinkles.
  • Don't be afraid to use multiple doilies in one shot, they can work well to tie a collection of cupcakes together as Sam shows us.
  • Make sure to take lots of photos from different angles so you can find one you're really happy with.
