Collaboration Review: Carnival Cakers

Collaboration: Carnival Cakers

We've been having a look around the cake world and have spotted this amazing collaboration from the Carnival Cakers, organised by Heba Elalfy.

We were invited to review this collaboration which is the 3rd annual Carnival Cakers Collaboration. It is celebrating the Calabar Carnival and Festival in Nigeria, which is also known as Africa's biggest street party!

Collaboration: Carnival Cakers

In this collaboration, various cake, cookie and sugar artists from around the globe have contributed designs to celebrate this festival that runs throughout the entire month of December every year and we LOVED it!

This group calls themselves The Carnival Cakers, and they are an international group of sugar artists who express edible beauty through cake, cookie, cupcake, sugar and so much more, to bring to you an annual event like none other.

We really enjoyed looking at it and all the amazing creations and so  have shared our thoughts below.

Some of our favourites from the Carnival Cakers:

We were amazed by the creativity, colour and beauty of this collaboration that we couldn't not share it with you all. The designs are stunning and the range of techniques is incredible, we have shared some of the cakes and their inspiration below, prepare to be wowed.

Kyoko Ueda - Sugar Voyager

Kyoko Ueda - Sugar Voyager

Kyoko is an incredible sugar artist. We love Kyoko's work and are big fans of her having reviewed her work many times in the past. We always find that she creates something really original and unique and she has achieved this once again in this stunning creation.

This cake is so well designed and the techniques are amazing. Kyoko has used gum  paste and fondant to create this incredible figurine. She has also used wafer paper combined with deco gel to create movement and a lightness to create the head dress, feathers and wings. This creation is nothing short of inspiring with 100 hand cut wafer paper feathers all hand crafted and finished with clear deco gel to create a curl.

We love the colours in this piece as it represents this element of carnival so beautifully. This figurine is amazing and Kyoko clearly has a flair for modelling and capturing movement.

Anastasia Kaliazin - Anastasia's Cakes

Anastasia Kaliazin - Anastasia's Cakes

Anastasia is an award winning cake artist based in Cape Town and is originally from St Petersburg in Russia. Her cake was beautiful with its gold and sequins design. The feathers and lace on the top really reflect her inspiration and do a wonderful job of capturing the carnival spirit.

Anastasia has used a textured ganache that she covered in gold to make the textured effect on her cake. This is such a unique way of creating this effect and we were so impressed by her creativity. The brightly coloured gelatine sequins really grasp the vibrancy seen at carnival and are added beautifully.

Anastasia has not needed a sculptured cake or modelling yet has still captured the vibrancy and joy of carnival in a beautiful one tier cake, with a really elegant design. She clearly has a creative flair and eye for colour and movement to design such an amazing cake.

Angela Penta - Angela Penta Cakes

The bold red of this cake really makes it stand out and it represents carnival so well as she was clearly inspired by the vibrant and joyful dancers in the left picture.

The modelling work in this cake is really inspirational and so detailed, she has done an amazing job of showcasing the feathers and outfits of the dancers at the carnival. Angela is clearly very talented at modelling and this is showcased in this wonderful cake.

This cake really showcases her inspiration well and she has done an amazing job of capturing this specific element of carnival. Catalina has used Sweetkolor Chocodant modelling paste and Sweetkolor fondant to make this stunning cake and create the model on top. The colours are really vibrant representing carnival incredibly well.

Ania is a self taught cake artist from Ireland and makes some really unique and bold cake designs. She has a clear flair for modelling and does some beautiful cake art.

This is another amazing cake, this one is so bright and colourful. The gold balls are made from Bora sugar paste and are painted with edible gold dust, they represent her inspiration so well and add a really interesting dimension to the overall cake.

The flower petals were created using a cutter but were finished by hand modelling. The petals ruffle beautifully on the bottom tier and are so well made, Anna has done a stunning job with them. She has really reflected the movement of costumes at the carnival which is a very impressive thing to achieve. This is clearly inspired by carnival and she has done some amazing work with this cake.

Beata Mielcarek - Cake Art Studio

Beata Mielcarek - Cake Art Studio

Beata is a cake artisit from Poland and she is the owner of Cake Art Studio. She has added another amazing design to this colourful collaboration.

Beata has made this wonderful cake complete with hoops and geometric designs. She used cutters for the sharp designs and cut outs on the bottom tier and the rest is all made by hand using painting and modelling techniques. This design is so impressive and the hand modelling makes this cake even more inspiring.

It is a little different to the others and we love how Beata has taken a different stance on carnival. She has really focused on fine details in the costumes, the cake sill has the bright colours that are so characteristic of the event, but the more abstract layering and ruffles add another element which Beata should be really proud of. The layering and different shapes and textures give this cake so many dimensions and she has clearly been inspired by the designs found in the costume from her inspiration on the left.

Branka Vukcevic - Moya Sugar Art

Branka is a cake artist from Montenegro and makes highly detailed cakes with beautifully made figurines and stunningly detailed painting. She is a really talented artist and caker.

Branka has done a seriously good job with this cake. The model on top of the cake has been made beautifully made and the beading down the sides of the main cake is really effective. We love the vibrancy of the colours which can often be hard to achieve in cakes but she has really nailed it.

We love the colouring combined with the feathers and the multiple heights, layers and dimensions this cake has. The feathers have been made using wafer paper and the dancer has been hand modelled. The feathers show movement so well and this just captures the fun of carnival, she has represented the festival wonderfully.

Cristina and Aurora are clearly an amazing pair! They've worked together on this creation and have done a really great job. From the headpiece to the modelling work, this is a stunning creation. They were inspired by this woman from carnival due to the beautiful colours in her costume combined with the feathers and pearls.

Cristina and Aurora are clearly incredibly talented and have bought the carnival to life in their beautifully made model. The colours are so bright and the detailed feathers really make this cake stand out. The feathers are intricate and beautifully made, they represent movement and showcase this costume incredibly well.

Elaine Minett - Ginger Cat Cakery

Elaine Minett - Ginger Cat Cakery

Elaine is based in West Sussex, UK and specialises in modelling and sugar work.

This cake has a slightly different take on the theme, with the use of individual tiers instead of modelling and sculpted cake, yet it captures the textures and styles seen at Carnival showcasing the festival incredibly well. Elaine was inspired by the pearl squares around the neckline the crown on this costume and she has represented them beautifully using dragees on her double barrelled tiered cake. This beading work combined with the feathers and the gold and red colour scheme really add to the wow factor.

The doubled barrelled tier is also really effective and adds to the grandeur of the cake. It is an inspired addition to the cake as it instantly makes the cake more eye catching. The feathers are made from wafer paper coloured with oil and edible dust and the gradient colour makes the feathers look all the more realistic, an attention detail that has worked beautifully.

Heba was bought up in Africa and this is what inspired her to head up this incredible collaboration. She is a cake artist and started by making her children's birthday cakes in 2010.

A stunning cake from Heba, the number of techniques she has used add up and work together beautifully to make this stunning cake. Heba used fondant on the tiers and also moulded her flowers using mould and fondant. She has used white chocolate beads on the top tier, showcasing the amazing collars on the costumes seen in the left photo.

Heba has added gold sporadically on the cake which again reflects this beautiful costume incredibly well. The wafer paper is amazing and is a great piece to adorn the top of the cake, giving it a pop of colour and sense of movement.

Vanessa is a chef who graduated form the French Culinary Institute in New York, she has entered many competitions and has succeeded in many across a range of food networks.

This piece is really refreshing as it is so different to anything we've seen before. Made entirely from Isomalt and an icing sheet this one definitely has the wow factor. The movement of the leaves and ribbons works so well and the lion is incredibly realistic.

The colours are stunning and the painting has been achieved beautifully. The painted lion is really impressive and the balloons made using the water balloon technique looks like something we would love to learn. It's so effective!

Jean Schapowall - Cakes with Character

Jean is a mum of three based in Long Island. She has been in the cake industry for 15 years and her art major and cake making skills work together to make her an incredible cake artist.

A wonderful representation of the colours and movements of carnival. Jean has used fondant, icing images, wafer paper and Simi Isomalt, a huge range of techniques that represent this costume so well. The layered wafer paper achieves a wonderful texture and the Isomalt shapes add a stunning and vibrant element to this cake.

The ruffled skirt at the base of the cake is so well crafted and the colours are just a perfect vibrancy, really showcasing the colours of carnival. The feathers are also an amazing statement that really draws the eye to the cake. They add to the height and ensure it isn't one we'd miss!

Jennifer Moshier - Prima Cakes and Cookies

Originally a graphic designer and web developer, Jennifer is now a cake and cookie artist having always had a passion for baking.

This is an amazing piece made from gingerbread! This entry from Jennifer has been hand cut and dragees have been individually placed to create an incredible jewelled effect, representing her inspiration incredibly well. The detail is amazing and showcases the stunning costumes of carnival beautifully.

The wafer paper is also a stunning addition, it is coloured using an airbrushing technique and works so well in representing this incredible head piece. Definitely another amazing piece with vibrant colours and wonderful details.

Joanne Wieneker - The Little Cake Patch

Joanne Wieneker - The Little Cake Patch Inspiration
Joanne Wieneker - The Little Cake Patch

Based in the US, Joanne is an incredible cake artist.

This cake is more unusual but captures a different part of carnival which is really lovely to see. The white and yellow colour scheme is really delicate and works well to represent these amazing costumes. The first tier is made suing modelling chocolate and gum paste while the wave leading from bottom to top has been made using Isomalt.

The ruffles on the base have been made using fondant and have then been topped with hand piped royal icing roses. Joanne has then hand modelled the face which conveys emotion so well, something that is so hard to achieve from modelling paste. She has finished off the cake with a pearl dust which adds to the serenity of the whole piece and gives the tiered cake a shimmery finish.

This is another remarkable piece and is wonderful take on carnival in a calming and beautiful way. Those hand piped roses also look amazing in the centre of this two tiered cake, we were stunned by this incredible cake.

Kamphet Che-Bui - Sweet Side of Cakes

Kamphet Che-Bui - Sweet Side of Cakes

Kamphet makes some incredibly unique tiered cake and often used greenery and foliage across her cakes. She is so talented and is excellent acheiveing sharp edges on double barrelled cakes which is another really impressive achievement.

We loved the sharp square edges in this three tiered cake with its textures and strong colours. Kamphet has used a torn paper texture effect combined with ruffles to add depth and dimension to her cake. She has made the flowers from wafer paper and gel colours have been used to paint the wafer paper which give the flowers a wonderful vibrancy.

Another abstract take on the colours and sights seen at carnival, Kamphet has done an impressive job of show casing these dancers so well.

Lorena is a specialist in hand painted and personalised cookies, she is incredibly talented and has a real flair for portraiture in cookie form.

This beautifully designed and hand painted cookie is just incredible. The detail is amazing and will have taken a very steady hand. Lorena has done a wonderful job of capturing the detail in this phenomenal costume and displaying it in cookie form. A hard thing to do but executed magnificently.

The colours are also wonderful, they are more subdued than the others but the layering of the orange and yellow works so well and adds depth and movement to this beautifully decorated cookie.

Nancy Cross - Sweet Traditions

Nancy is a sugar artist from Oklahoma and makes custom cakes and cookies from her home.

Another cookie entry and a wonderful representation of these mermaid costumes. Nancy has used a royal icing piping technique painted with gel colours and shimmer dusts, it is incredibly detailed and beautifully executed.

The Isomalt technique works so well to represent the flames and the water alike. She cleverly made this even more incredible by being back lit with a small LED light. She has used a pouring and pulling technique to make her Isomalt water and this creates and incredibly realistic effect. This cookie really has so many elements and Nancy has done a stunning job.

This cake is really amazing with its hand painted portrait combined with feathers adding a three dimensional element, Sophia has done a stunning job. The face has been created using edible powders and the feathers are made from wafer paper. The detail in the feathers is incredible and are made beautifully.

The blue and turquoise is so bold and eye catching and when it is combined with edible powder painting it makes for an extraordinary cake. Sophia has really used her double barrelled tier to her advantage and makes this cake even more eye catching as a representation of carnival should be.

Tasnuta Alam - Cake Topperz

Tasnuta is based in Aberdeen and runs Cake Topperz.

Tasnuta has done a stunning job with this two tiered cake, we can't believe it's all handmade! She has taken inspiration from this porcupine style costume and gold headdress. The black, white and gold colour scheme is really impressive and the beading adds a wonderful amount of detail.

Tasnuta clearly has a talent for modelling as no moulds, embossers or cutter were used in the making of this cake and we are just so impressed. This cake really represents these magnificent costumes so well.

Zaneta is a very talented cake artist and has won 3 awards from Cake International at the NEC in Birmingham.

And last but by no means least, this red beauty is from Zaneta and she has done an incredible job. Zaneta has used Isomalt and wafer paper to make her gold decorations which are incredibly effective and represent this costume beautifully.

The gold third tier is stunning and so bold, complete with the sugar poppies adorning the top of the cake, it really is a showstopper. Her use of Isomalt and wafer paper is second to none and we are really impressed by this 4 tiered cake.

Ana Mourinho Remigio - Cupcakes and Dreams Portugal

Ana Mourinho Remigio - Cupcakes and Dreams Portugal Inspiration
Ana Mourinho Remigio - Cupcakes and Dreams Portugal

Ana is a cake artist based in Portugal and makes some incredibly unique designs for her cakes, she never fails to impress us.

This cake is just amazing, the detail is astounding and the fact that Ana made each feather by hand is nothing short of incredible. Each of the 110 feathers took 30 minutes to make, this makes for a mind blowing 55 hours! They are are all made completely by hand with no moulds or cutters, which we were so impressed by.

The skirt design at the base of this cake is so well represented and the details of the bodice are intricately and beautifully designed. The bright colours of the central cake acts as an amazing centre piece for the gold feather spray and the gold details on the cake help to pull this whole cake design together.
